Blendtec Vitamix Comparison
Blendtec or Vitamix? A heated debate has been ongoing between rabid fans from both camps. Let’s compare Blendtec to Vitamix blenders and find out the major differences between the two so that you can make an informed decision when you are ready to buy.
Blendtec vs Vitamix Motor Power
The Blendtec Total blender has a 3-horsepower motor with a two-prong stainless-steel blade, while the Vitamix has a 2-horsepower motor with stainless-steel hammermill and a four-pronged laser-cut 3”diam. blade. While multiple Blendtec Will It Blend videos have sprouted all over promoting the fact that Blendtec blenders can destroy iphones, ipads, lighters (?), marbles and a whole lot more, it begs the question: what exactly are you intending to use your blender for? Both Blendtec and Vitamix blenders can crush ice, and in fact Blendtec blenders come with an ice crusher guarantee.
Is a 3HP motor overkill for a kitchen blender? Have the good folks in the Blendtec Quality Control department lost their marbles? It would seem that the main advantage of the 29,000 RPM velocity achieved by this blender is that it allows it to heat up soup faster than the Vitamix blender.
Having said all this, repeated comments indicate occasional motor failures with the Blendtec.
The 2HP motor of the Vitamix seems to get the job done.
Vitamix Blendtec Noise Decibels
One major issue with the Blendtec is the noise level, not surprising given its horsepower. The Vitamix seems to be easier to live with. An interesting note: a solid stone countertop like granite may help muffle the sound compared to a laminate countertop – who would have thought?
Is Blendtec louder than Vitamix? The Blendtec Total has been compared to a leaf blower, while one enthusiastic Vitamix owner compared its sound to that of a purring Ferrari motor!
Blendtec Versus Vitamix Blending Options
When it comes to the controls on the appliance for choosing the appropriate settings for your particular recipe, the Blendtec definitely comes on top. It features six pre-programmed settings which will automatically set up the blender to make your desired recipe, whether it be a smoothie, or some ice cream.
The Vitamix on the other hand only has a variable speed control, though Vitamix users do not seem to have an issue with being in control of their own blending, stating that it is easy to do and only takes seconds.
Vitamix Versus Blendtec Construction
. Blending Jar
A lesser issue is that the plastic polycarbonate container scratches easily when mixing dry goods like grains, seeds, etc. More serious are complaints about the jar leaking and even cracking, and the bottom seal breaking down, leaving residue in their blended food! Last but not least, this Blendtec blender also seems to have a propensity to blow its lid which can be dangerous when you are dealing with hot contents. Maybe it would rather destroy something worthy of itself, like ipads…
The Vitamix CIA professional countertop blender has a BPA-free Eastman Tritan copolyester jar with superb blending ability.
. Blender Base
While the Vitamix is more solidly constructed mostly out of metal with a brushed aluminum faceplate and sports a thermal protection system with a radial cooling fan, the Blendtec gets criticized for the “cheap feel” of its plastic base which does nothing to dampen noise or vibration. For fear of hearing damage occurring with regular use, one reviewer even went to the trouble of getting “a pair of earmuffs from the shooting supply place to wear while using it”, though he admits it may be overkill. Better safe than sorry!
The Vitamix comes with a tamper to help push down more solid foods as they blend. It is designed so that it can’t interfere with the blade operation.
Blendtec claims that its blenders do not need tampers but some customers disagree, stating that it is a “patently false claim that the device does not need a tamping rod”. When blending thicker recipes than smoothies, the blender appears to cavitate, i.e. create a void around the blades so that nothing actually gets blended.
. Recipe Books
Nice additions exclusive to the Vitamix are a couple of recipe books which are somewhat special. I can’t think of better inspiration for breaking in a new blender than recipes created by CIA’s Certified Master Chefs and other top professional chefs… or better guidance than Chef Michael Symon’s “Let’s Get Started” DVD cooking class. Now that’s starting on the right foot.
Vitamix vs Blendtec Price
One last consideration to add to our Vitamix vs Blendtec comparison is of course the issue of price. As of now, count on spending a little more on the Vitamix. So you will need to decide if it’s worth it.
Overall, the Blendtec blender is less popular at the moment though it shows more reviews.
Should I Get a Vitamix or Blendtec Blender?
In summary, here are the Pros & Cons we have uncovered:
Blendtec Total Blender
Pros: greater horsepower, Smart Touch technology, less expensive, fits under most top cabinets
Cons: jar and motor issues, very noisy, comes in Black or White only
Pros: better jar and lid, stronger built base (slightly heavier but less noisy), comes with a tamper and recipe books, comes in four colors
Cons: more expensive, too tall to fit under most top cabinets
Conclusion: Blendtec Versus Vitamix
This is not an easy decision. Price alone may sway you towards the Blendtec. On the other hand, the professional grade Vitamix has a higher quality base and jar which factures into the difference in price. Add to that the fact that the Vitamix is endorsed by the Culinary Institute of America where it is used to train its future chefs! You pay for what you get.
In a nutshell, here’s what we conclude from our Blendtech vs Vitamix showdown:
. The Blendtec Total is an ultra powerful piece of equipment, paired with extreme versatility and quick, easy self-cleaning – the King Kong of blenders with the occasional behavior issue thrown in.
. The Vitamix CIA professional blender is also powerful, extremely versatile and self- cleaning, but perhaps more simple and intuitive to use – more like the David Copperfield of the blender world.
