KitchenAid Artisan Mixer Review

KitchenAid Artisan mixerMy dog and my KitchenAid Artisan mixer. Those are the two things I would run for if the house burst up in flames. Now that makes no sense at all. I’m not a cook, so why save the mixer? Truth be told, I fell in love with my Kitchen Aid Artisan for its looks, and then the little rascal became indispensable – just like a great sous-chef!

I must confess, looks are what first attracted me to the Artisan mixer. And I’m not the only one. Though I don’t usually go for the retro look, the design of the KitchenAid Artisan series is flawless and a wonder to behold. So much so that it has become an icon of design.

But to buy a KitchenAid Artisan mixer just for its looks is to sell it short by a good country mile. Let’s take a look at the main features that take the KitchenAid Artisan to a higher level.

KitchenAid Artisan Mixer Features

Kitchen Aid Artisan Tilt-Head DesignHead Type

The Artisan KitchenAid features a locking tilt-head design which makes it easier to access the beaters, reach inside the bowl or remove it from its base. Of course, you’ll also need extra clearing space to allow the head to swing backwards.

Powerful Motor

A 325-watt motor powers the Artisan and makes child’s play of just about any task you can throw at it.

5-Quart Bowl Capacity

KitchenAid Artisan Mixer ReviewThe Kitchen Aid Artisan mixer’s 5-quart bowl has a 9-cup average capacity. It can mix 9 dozen cookies, 4 ½ loaves of bread, or 7 lbs of mashed potatoes. The polished stainless steel bowl is ergonomically designed with a comfort handle which makes it easier to pour as well as release the bowl from its base. Kudos to KitchenAid from all butter fingers like mine!

The KitchenAid mixer Artisan series comes with four accessories:
. nylon-coated C-shape dough hook
. nylon-coated flat beater
. 6-wire whip
. pouring shield
More convenience: since they are nylon-coated and not burnished metal like with other series (Classic Plus, Ultra power & most Professional), both dough hook and flat beater are dishwasher safe.

Artisan Mixer Planetary Mixing ActionPlanetary Mixing Action

KitchenAid’s trademarked planetary mixing action is designed so that the beater spirals to 67 different touch points within the bowl, achieving the highest beater-to-bowl coverage in the industry.

Maximum mixing efficiency, faster results – don’t know about you, but I’m grinning like a Cheshire cat right now! 😉

Mixing Speeds

The Kitchen Aid Artisan mixer’s 10-Speed Solid-State Control with direct-drive transmission ranges from a very slow stir to a very fast whip, providing greater control when adding ingredients. Greater speed selection and control also makes it easier to achieve perfect results.

Direct Drive Transmission

For the technically challenged like myself: Direct drive transmission is more efficient than regular transmission in that it requires less space and fewer parts to move power, which explains why a relatively small appliance can be so powerful. At least that’s my take on it, and I stand by it. What I can say for sure is that my Artisan packs one hell of a punch.

KitchenAid Artisan Mixer Features

KitchenAid Artisan Series

There are three KitchenAid Artisan series available:
. Artisan Series (KSM150PS)
. Artisan Design Series (KSM155GB)
. Artisan Custom Metallic Series (KSM152PS)

The mixers themselves are basically the same with some slight variations:
. each series has its own range of colors;
. the Artisan Custom Metallic sports a high-end custom metallic finish;
. the Artisan Design features a glass bowl instead of stainless steel. The see-through bowl is calibrated to 10 cups (2.5L), allowing you to easily monitor quantity.
. weight varies according to the series:
KSM150PS: 26lbs
KSM155GB: 29lbs (glass bowl)
KSM152PS: 27lbs

KitchenAid Artisan Colors

KitchenAid Artisan ColorsI would say that the majority of people looking at KitchenAid Artisan mixers check color first: does the Artisan come in a color that coordinates with their kitchen? With over 50 colors to choose from, they’re not likely to be disappointed.

. Artisan KSM150PS is offered in a whopping choice of 41 colors
. Artisan Design KSM155GB is now available in 11 colors
. Artisan Custom Metallic KSM152PS comes in 4 colors

Raging fans are quite vocal about their favorite color. In fact, it is often the first feature they mention in their reviews, and many own the Artisan in more than one color. If you can’t find a Kitchen Aid Artisan to coordinate with your kitchen, it’s time for a makeover…

Artisan Mixer Dimensions

The Artisan KitchenAid mixer stands at 13 15/16″ high and measures 8 3/4″ wide and 14 1/8″ deep. Weight is not so simple…

Weighing in at 25 and 26 lbs respectively, the Artisan KSM150PS and the Artisan Custom Metallic KSM152PS mixers can be carted in and out of storage without breaking your back.

The Artisan Design KSM155GB on the other hand is a hefty 29 lbs due to its lovely glass bowl. This one, you might want to leave on your countertop and let it shine like the star it truly is.

KitchenAid Artisan Mixer Reviews: the Pros

That rogue on my countertop has got that dangerous gleam about him: challenge me if you dare! And over the past eight years I have done just that. Cookie dough, cake mixes, whipped cream, meringues, homemade dog food – you name it, and this mixer has done it without ever flinching. But don’t just take my word for it. Thousands of Amazon customers report being extremely pleased with their KitchenAid Artisan mixer. These are the main features they praise:

• Color Selection
The fantastic array of colors makes it easy to complement any décor or provide a splash of color for contrast.
• Tilt-Head Design
Offers better access to the bowl and beaters.
• Bowl
The ergonomically designed bowl is broader than the Classic’s, providing better access.
It also sports a comfort handle, making it easier to maneuver specially for weaker hands.
• Accessories
Both flat beater and dough hook are nylon coated and dishwasher proof.
The pouring shield helps avoid splashing when adding dry or liquid ingredients.
• Dimensions
The 13 15/16″ height of the Artisan usually fits under top cabinets.
• Optional Attachments
As with any of the KitchenAid stand mixers, the option to purchase separate attachments in order to increase versatility is a huge plus, resulting in savings of money and storage space.
• Manufacturing
Good quality made in the USA.

Artisan Mixer Reviews: the Cons

• Weight
Some may feel that the 25- to 29-lb weight (depending on model) can make it hard to cart in and out of storage, though that weight also makes it stable.
• Power
The 325-watt motor may not be the best choice if you love baking and favor heavier bread or pizza doughs.
• Accessories
For heavy bakers, the spiral dough hook of the Professional may perform better.

Our Recommendation

The KitchenAid Artisan mixer is a true workhorse that can easily satisfy the needs of most baking enthusiasts. Its 5-quart bowl with comfort handle accommodates double recipes, and the 325-watt motor can handle just about anything you throw at it.

The only issue with the Kitchen Aid Artisan is that it comes in such a tempting array of scrumptious colors and finishes that you may have trouble choosing only one! Even if you don’t cook much, a gorgeous Artisan basking in the limelight on your countertop will make you look like a pro.

I hope our KitchenAid Artisan mixer review has helped shed light for you on my kitchen sweetheart. But if you are passionate about bread making or love churning out pizzas, you might want to have a look at a KitchenAid Professional 600 stand mixer which comes equipped with a spiral dough hook.
